Let’s be honest here. If you are in business for yourself, sometimes it gets hard. Really hard in fact. We try things, they don’t work. We have to learn new skills, platforms, techniques... new everything! We work with people, they aren’t happy. We talk to a prospect, they say no. We talk to another, they say no too. We put ourselves out there and get crickets.
The list goes on and on about how business can get hard.
Even though it gets hard sometimes, we must know what to do when those difficult times arise. Why? Because if we hold ourself in a space of negative emotion then we lose precious time (and happiness and no one wants that). The only resource we can never get back is time and in the world entrepreneurship, time is of the essence. Learning how to bounce back after a fall is a crucial skill to every entrepreneur. The faster you can pick yourself up after a fall, the faster you can get back to business.
Here are 7 things I’ve discovered that have helped me when it inevitably gets tough.
1. Don’t make the problem bigger than it is.
It’s easy to get into overwhelm and make a mountain out of a molehill. Remember to keep in mind the reality of the problem. Is really that big of a deal? What can you do to help yourself now?
Often times the problem is not as big as we feel it is, especially in relation to the things that matter (like our health, safety, happiness, etc.)
This isn't to negate that you are going through something, this is just to put it into a reality check so that you can move through it with ease.
2. Remember the old saying, ‘This Too Shall Pass’.
Sometimes it is tough in the moment but you must remember that this too shall pass. You will move beyond this and you will be okay.
3. Find the lesson.
The tough times are our teachers. Sometimes I personally hate to admit this but I know it through and through (wouldn’t it be easier if we could learn things by always happily going through life?). That would be nice. But the reality is problems are our friends because they are getting us to the next level.
With each difficult time, dig deep and get in to some self reflection. What is the universe reflecting back to you? Are you being true to who you are? Could you have done better? What’s really going on? Do you need to apologize? Do you need to take a chill pill (I’m serious about that one)?
The sooner you discover the lesson, the faster you can find the solution and move on.
4. Love yourself anyways.
We have all had times when we questioned ourselves. Is this really for me? Can I really do it? Will this really work?
I know I have.
Often times we might be the one who made the mistake and perhaps it was even really big. You’ve got to love yourself through it. Be kind to yourself. Let yourself off the hook. Go back to #3 (find the lesson) and then remind yourself that you are indeed human and you WILL make mistakes. But as long as you do what you know is right and you stand up for who you are, then take a deep breath and let it go because all you can do is all you can do and all you can do is enough.
5. Know this is a part of being in business (and in life).
When you are working on any big goal (like building a business, raising good children, losing and keeping off weight, building a relationship, etc.), it is going to get hard at some point in time. Mistakes will be made. Shit will happen.
Just knowing this reminds me of my humanity and that life is full of twists and turns. The faster we each can learn to dance with life, the more fun it will get.
6. Get support. Don’t do it alone.
The BEST thing you can do in these times is to talk about it. I’m not giving permission to bitch about the same problem over and over again. I AM giving you permission to talk about the problem, your feelings with someone you trust and with whom can understand where you are coming from. It’s important to be heard and sometimes, being heard can be all you need to get back on track.
Give yourself the gift of having a close trusted network that can help you through things. Sometimes that is a good friend, colleague or coach.
Whomever it is, use it. Holding it inside is not good for your health and makes the problem bigger. So glad your trusted advisor and give yourself permission to talk it out and be heard.
7. Move on.
Once you have talked it through and learned the lesson, move on. Harbouring over something difficult keeps it in your energy field which attracts more situations like it. Let it go. Focus on where you are going next. Focus on what IS working in your world right now. Focus on the good. Focus on what you love. Focus on life.
That's it! Those are the 7 things that help me when things get tough. What about you? What helps you when things get tough? I'd love to hear in the comments.
Thanks for being here and if you are going through a tough time right now, remember that you have everything within you to feel good again.
